Purim is a word (ancient Persian with Hebrew pluralization) that means “lots.” It is a reference to the lots that Haman (the evil chief advisor to the King) used to determine the date of the mass murder of the Jews in all of Persia.
In the book of Esther, as we read through the account of darkness attempting once again to snuff out the light, we never see God’s name actually referenced; instead, we are invited to look for Him closely and see Him at work on the pages. He is there ahead of Haman’s plot as He positioned Esther. He is there ensuring Mordechai was in the right place at the right time to save King Xerxes’ life. He sets a table for Esther in the presence of her enemies, and that table becomes an altar of rescue.
Each year as we celebrate Purim, we are reminded how important it is to look for God through the lens of trust and wonder for how He never fails to keep His promises and keep His people. Ultimately, Purim is a celebration of God turning the enemy's plans upside down and working all things together for the good of those He loves.
Below you will soon find resources, reflections, and recommendations for celebrating Purim. Always feel free to contact us with any questions- we are glad you're at the table!
